The Skeletal System
What You’ll Learn
The bone matrix consists of an organic component made up primarily of type I collagen fibers, as well as an inorganic component composed mainly of calcium hydroxyapatite crystals. The primary structural unit of compact bone is the Haversian system, which is a long, cylindrical structure formed by the concentric deposition of bone lamellae. Bone can be classified as either immature woven bone or mature lamellar bone, depending on the orientation and organization of the collagen fibers. Osteoblasts are responsible for depositing the organic osteoid matrix, which then undergoes mineralization, while osteoclasts are responsible for resorbing bone during the remodeling process
